British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
