Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
