Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
